I remember when I was in Thailand in 1997, there was a big scandal going on in nearby Myanmar; a rave was busted and there was an Asian soap opera star at the event, high on ecstasy. Myanmar's drug policies are about as stringent as you can get and selling drugs there is punishable by death, so it was a Huge Issue that this starlet got busted while high. She immediately lost her job as an actress, and it was all over the newspapers, and her family was talking about disowning her.
We really do forget how safe we are here. In many parts of the world, the risk of partying (whether or not that involves drugs is often irrelevant) is a serious risk indeed.
