Advice from those coming in from out of town for the first time...

I wrote this in response to an email I got from an American flying in for the first time in Toronto and thought I'd repost it here so that it might be of help for other people.

If anyone has anything they'd like to add (from personal experience or otherwise) please feel free to respond.

----------------------

Hi, the venue for the party is called The Opera House which is located near downtown Toronto. The airport is on the west side of the city. so you'll need to get from there to closer downtown. There are airport shuttle buses which will take you to a variety of
hotels/locations downtown for around $25 (canadian). A taxi will cost about $40. I think there's also TTC (toronto transit) for much cheaper, and that will involve taking a bus, and then transfering to the subway. That'll be an adventure but much cheaper (Totally safe though, toronto is a very safe city). I found a link to their website:

http://www.city.toronto.on.ca/ttc/s..._to_airport.htm

I recommend you stay at a hotel somewhere during your stay. The Days Inn in Downtown Toronto (30 Carlton St) (Daysinn.com for reservations) (Subway stops right near it (the college/carleton street stop) can be booked for about $100 canadian a night. The Opera House is less than $10 from most downtown hotels. There is also a 24 hour street car which runs down Queen St (one of the bigger streets here) from downtown to right in front of the venue.

Here is a mapquest link to the venue:

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.ad...=69&submit.y=12

The Opera House also has a website:

http://www.theoperahousetoronto.com

I also recommend http://www.toronto.com for looking up stuff.

There's also a GO Bus that goes from the airport to Yorkdale/York Mills. It'll cost like 4 bucks.

I got this email about the TTC on Queen street that weekend:
Quote:

The Bridge at Queen St and the Don River will be closed on May 11th.
Below is from the TTC website:

Starting April 1st, TTC streetcar service on the Queen Street Bridge over
the Don River will be altered during bridge rehabilitation and track
reconstruction. The bridge will be closed for approximately 16 weeks.
Streetcars will divert around the construction site, bringing customers as
close to the regular routes as possible.

Routes affected by the construction are:

- 501/301 Queen Streetcar
- 502 Downtowner Streetcar
- 503 Kingston Road Streetcar
- 504 King Streetcar
- 303 Don Mills Night Bus

Streetcars on the above list will divert both ways around the closed
bridge via: Broadview Avenue, Dundas Street East and Parliament
Street. Transit service over the Queen/Don River Bridge will resume on
or before July 21, 2002.

Although I gather from that that the streetcar will still get to Queen and Broadview which is a block away from the venue. So I think if you just stay on the street car while it goes on it's detour there will be no need to panic.

Post Car n stuff.

As was stated above. Take public Transportation. You do not need to rent a car.

Also, keep an extra $20 Canadian in your pocket, in your bag, or whatever. Because you don't want to spend all your money at hulla. Having money for a cab after those show is always a plus.

I am not sure if they still do meetups at this place called Nathan Phillips (so I am out of date so sue me.), but its really easy to find, and you can meet up with someone there.

Canadians are really friendly about directions, helping people from far away. I used to fly up to TO from NC every know and then to hit events.

Oh, and you only need to be 19 to drink. Canadian beer is actually quite good. I suggest blue but most people will tell yah molsen is better. *is not to start another debate in this thread*.

See - yah at hulla.

Cheers,

Jare Fox

Exclamation another piece of advice

NOT that i advocate the use of illegal substances -- but if u'r coming from the states, dont bring any with you

this kid (not me of course ) had his car searched at the border and was forced to eat his pills really quick at 8pm

then he found out when he got there that canadians can get this stuff so much cheaper anyway

if u'r gonna use, and i'm not saying that's a good thing . . . . be smart, let someone else take the risk of trying to get it in the country

just a friendly piece of advice

oh yeah

oh - and jarefox is right --- canadian beer is really good, and i think americans prefer blue

try to have canadian money with you - makes life easier & canadians are soo cute with all that coined money anyway

and canadians seem to be EXTREMELY friendly, so dont be afraid to roll down your window in TO & ask where queen street is ...

god Frolic - i love your parties & your town

I'd also highly suggest that you don't lie to the border guards. You tell them you're attending a Concert at the Opera House in Toronto. From my experience they will pull a car in for further questioning at random, like every so many cars, so don't sweat if it happens. There's nothing illegal about coming to Canada for a concert, and as mentioned, don't ever risk bringing anything illegal across that might be found. If you don't get arrested, you'd certainly be banned for life from entering so it's just not worth it.

They'll also probably want to know where you're staying, so have that information with you.

There's never been a "summer" hulla.. but for the past few years there's been a Hulla presence at WEMF. I think WEMF will be the first weekend of August this year. There's always something going on in Toronto.. just keep your eyes on the other events forum.

my advice would be to make sure you have a birth certificate/passport AND photo id when crossing...

I went to Toronto last weekend and couldn't find my birth certificate...we ended up getting thouroughly searched and had to go through immigration, which is no fun btw, and it took over an hour.

Oh and another bit of good advice...I know I get pissed of when I run out of American cigarettes and I have to buy Belmonts...but stores in Toronto now sell Camels ($6 CND though)

Here is my advice to those who come from out of town.

Stay DOWNTOWN. Delta Chelsea, and the Crowne Plaza are really nice hotels and you can get them for about $159 Canadian Dollars (puts funny emphasis on 'dollars') If you book in advance.

I come up or should I say over for NYE and any hulla I can make it for.

It is sooooooooo worth it, especially in the summertime.

Oh, and don't drive downtown, people may think cabs are expensive... but have you ever been in a cab in Chicago? Geeeeeeez. Cabs are way cheap in TO.

Well, good night.
God Bless Canada, Canadiens, Hulla's, Chris, and the funny 'o' and 'a' sounds.

Peace!
