Smile Remebering the ultimate april fools joke...

Was going through my hard drive tonight and thought I'd repost this as we near the end of the year. Reaction alone to this was priceless, with my phone ringing off the hook from people calling who really should have known better. Not to mention the countless angry emails (and supportive ones as well) I received that day.

It was quite an eleborate hoax, with Silver1 planting the seeds a week or 2 ahead of time by starting a debate about sponsership of the scene in our message boards. "Helmut" in the photos is played by my uncle at his office. Photos were also taken by Silver1. We also kept this the biggest secret, only 3 or 4 of us were in on the joke so it could have maximum impact. We didn't even tell Will .

It's interesting to look back on this now as a time capsule. The whole joke was based around people's hatred for sponsership and the "selling out" of the scene. However, looking at the state of the scene today and comparing that to the "promises" of this fake deal it's hard to argue that we are better off without sponsership.

That would be assuming that there were sponsership dollars available in the first place, which is a whole other issue.

Comments?

i was just going to say, before i read your last post, that looking back on that... i think it would have actually been a really good thing for the TO scene... considering the shambles it is in now...

lol

Yea, that was a great one.

Remember all the controversy that it kicked up?
Everyone was arguing whether it was good for Toronto or bad or hullabaloo selling out or blah blah blah

Oh man, it was insanity.

Going to try and top it this year?

Although it was a great trick, it didn't fool me at all. I didn't want to spoil it so in my post near the top of the thread, I hinted that it was a joke.. I thought I was clear enough... but it went on for ever! Even after posting 'APRIL FOOLS' or whatever.. people still wrote about it. Shows how often replies actually get read. :]

I just tried searching for the thread.. where'd it go? I looked for Interbrew in both here and the archives... !?
