Any one catch City TV's coverage of that new Ecstacy public service commerical?

yesterday (October the 10th) I was watching the 6 o'clock news on City TV and there was a segment by Laura DiBattista about a new public service commerical from Toronto Public Health about the dangers of Ecstacy.

Commerical was of 2 'ravers' in some burned out dark warehouse, the male was on the floor and couldn't get up and the girl was running around looking for help and there was none (the place was empty) and she was looking very sketchy. Then they show a phone number you can call for drug help.

After the segment Laura was discussing it with the achor, Anne Withthereallylonglast name. I was shocked at the discussion. I don't have it logged but I'll paraphrase it best I can:

Laura: Public Health says that 200 000 people in Ontario have tried it.

Anne: Now they're advertising the dangers of Ecstacy, but how many deaths have there actually been? I've heard 80 in the U.S. out of possibly millions and around a dozen in Ontario. Those numbers don't compare at all with, say, alcohol.

Laura: yes, the numbers are even much smaller than heroin or other drugs and of course alcahol kills thousands each year.

Anne: Is it really neccessary to spend all this money on this commercial?

Laura: yeah, I agree, and the commercial doesn't sit well with me either. It seems to just be a bunch of fear mongering and no one is going to go for that.

Anne: So what do we do?

Laura: I think the best thing to do is educate people on the dangers of it at the street level. Even giving out information at the clubs themselves.

(oh, they refered to E as a "club drug" through this entire segment.)

anyways. thats pretty much it. I couldn't believe that a large media outlet was actually speaking sanely about this. Just wanted to post this here for posterity.

i guess they're actually starting to accept it now....

kewl. I never do it cuz i'm epileptic but i've seen friends on e and it just makes me laugh when they're sketchy. but all the unknown side effects (mainly long term ones) and possible dangers.

Whatever it comes down to, i'm proud of myself and a lot of other people that it's a choice that you make. At least it's not like some places where if you're not doped up in some way you're considered an outcast...

I'm up in thunder bay right now. I used to be in oakville and we have one club up here where they even advertise on the radio that "we guarantee that you'll be red eyed when you leave". I can't handle things like that. We need an education group or something because e is still mostly easy to get and the cops roughly have no idea what it is. mind you the mounties do. there haven't been any od's yet but i can see it happening really quickly and then it'll be another fiasco which is something i really don't want.

i've lost friends. i've watched as they've degraded to the point of non-existance. from the apex of self-depreciation to the depths of substance elation, all that in the name of the pleasure-quest (and i can't calim that i wasn't part of it), but, esctasy has never been the ultimate undoing of anyone i know.

cheers! to those who quesion the source of degredation in our society--even more cheers! to those that recognise that not all persuits of delight are created equal.

no one means to hurt themseleves, or those they care about. all any of us can do is work towards the best of what we belive in.

hopefuly that's enough, and hopefully we can all smile at the end of our day's adventures. there's very little else to ask for.

story.
